RARE Antique HC Black Forest Cigar Chest, Box, with Hound, Dog, 4 Server Trays, 32 Cigars. All items and photos are the express property of Antiques & Uncommon Treasure. A rare and spectacular find, the carved Black Forest dogs are about the rarest subject to find, and we all love them. This little guy sits atop a beautifully crafted and very well preserved cigar chest (not a humidor, no moisture apparatus, remember) or serving box. Each of the 4 slide-out trays remain in excellent and undamaged state, and it holds a total of 32 cigars, up to 4.5 in length. Old as it is, and size, it was likely a cheroot cabinet. The hinged top lifts up and folds back to reveal the serving trays. All measurements are noted on the photos, but it’s 9.5″ tallest, 9.5″ widest (at feet). No chips, no breaks, no hairlines or shrinkage or warping. It has a working lock, but at listing time I do not have a key to work it or attend it. We do have a stash of 19gh century keys for these old casket locks, but so far we haven’t got one fitted to this. We’ll continue to search one out, but as it stands now, it comes without key. If we find one, we’ll annotate the listing and price. Very good to excellent condition throughout. I find no chips or loss to the carvings, though it’s likely perhaps a tiny nip on end of leaf or a little rough spot is there somewhere. I do notice on our photos that the light seems to make it look like one eye is missing a little glass bead. In fact, neither has or had glass beads, and it’s just angle of light. The pupils are carved as recesses, so one could certainly set a small black glass bead in each should you wish to have him have glass eyes. It was not originally thus, and it is not a flaw you’re seeing on the photos – just a glare. Full measurements are noted on the photos. Not sure the breed of that darling dog, but he’s without damage. Again, dogs are rare! We’ve fully cleaned the box. There are no odors at all. We’re easy to deal with. You are very important! I offer for sale a fabulous 19th century (1800’s) large antique Victorian to Edwardian era French Black Forest 15 cigar chest or cabinet, a beautiful decorative box with ornate carvings two large bird or Curlew figural top, and also floral carvings on each side including the back. This case has a complete interior consisting of 7 drawers or trays plus another drawer beneath the doors to hold cigar smoking accessories. All of the original interior cigar trays remain with the chest and will hold a total of 63 cigars, as each wooden shelf has recesses for 9 cigars. No breaks, warps or missing pieces. Each shelf slides smoothly in and out of the grooved slot construction of the interior. A beautiful piece of furniture where ever you decide to display it. Delightful Antique Black Forest Victorian to Edwardian era 8 5/8 cigar cabinet, chest, presentation or service box with elegant serpentine shaping, highly ornate foliate carving and raised or applied flower & leaf grouping on top. We’ve had and offered a wide variety of these great old Black Forest boxes in the past featuring a host of different and wonderful forest critters, the foxes are a personal favorite for me though everyone loves the stags, bears, other animals. The Fruits of the Hunt themes are also popular, this one with a foliate motif throughout, no animals but a wonderful serpentine shaping and lighter wood finish. Relatively dainty in size but all of the visual & decorative appeal. The lid and front doors open tantalus style, fittings for upright cigars inside and a drawer in the base that has partitions and a covered match compartment. All of the original interior cigar fittings remain with the chest and will hold a total of 36 cigars, eighteen in the rear fittings and nine on each door. A few small flaws but, as you can see, this one is fabulous! If you’ve followed us for a while you know I’m a big fan of the old hand carved “Black Forest” items that come to us from 19th century Switzerland, Germany, parts of France and Italy, where they pleased the Grand Tour tourists and still please us all today. These hand carved treasures range from whimsical small bears to large and elaborate mantel clocks, wall clocks, wall plaques showing the most awesome anatomical studies of stag, fowl, “fruits of the hunt”. I’ve got more to list so look through the vast collection. I’ve just used quite a few piece in our own 2nd home decoration , Rocky Mountains location, and love the look as well as the heritage since my own ancestors hail from that region and others. The pieces work well in Country Manor, French Country, Ski Lodge or Hunt Lodge and even in a den or office. Everything from a pocket watch case to huge plaques – from needle and thread holders to cigar caddy – these decorative objects survive today a testament to the artisan’s craft of carving wood. Very good condition for age and type, with a beautiful lighter finish yet slightly aged patina to the exterior carved wood cabinet, likely Lindon wood, or a lighter walnut. The pull on the lower drawer has a glue repair and there are a few glued restorations around the base where the serpentine sides meet the solid wood bases (above and below the drawer) but they really don’t detract from the piece in any way. The lock & key work but there is no mechanism to keep the left side door from opening when locked (and I don’t see that there ever was). See pictures for all measurements. We’re easy to deal with. We can never keep this style cigar serving chest in inventory for long, theyre always so popular and especially this time of year. This is a fine 19th c. Victorian to early Edwardian era Black Forest hand carved chest with the original four sliding shelves or trays, ready to serve up 32 cigars. It is not a humidor, but is a chest that would have been brought out after dinner when the ladies retired to another room and the gentlemen stayed at table or den for a cigar and mens talk. Served with price, this one is the style that would have been found in any well-pointed home or lodge. The carving definitely Black Forest, with vines, foliage & edelweiss carved into the front and side panels, a raised or applied group of foliage & edelweiss flowers centered on the lid. Rare to find these anymore that dont have some restorations or breaks (with a nod to the age/drying splits visible in the lid here). I see only a few other minor flaws to show for its age. A beautiful lighter finish or patina to the old wood. Weve taken the time to clean and lightly wax it, as with all our beautiful old Black Forest carved items, and youll be thrilled to put it to use, or just to display. Very good condition for age and type, with four original sliding trays still inside. Each tray holds eight cigars (the center groove is shorter due to the pulls or knobs but could be used if you so wish for slightly shorter cigars) and the total is 32+ cigars. Double-hinged and with the original lock and working key, this is truly a tantalus, though not a humidor as there is no soaker, etc.. It is for service, not to keep cigars moist. There are also a few old bug or worm holes in the wood, nothing active but they are there (mostly along the lower part of the front panel). It does have a few flaws but most to after all these years and, as you can see, its lost little of its visual and decorative appeal. Working lock complete with key. Measurements on the photos.
