Slightly tapered body with a thickened edge (small cracks) banded base and flared foot. Contoured lid with acorn finial (slightly skewed). The interior with a second lid or press which preserved the tobacco from the air. Imperfections as mentioned incurred in its working life and now with good patina. 4 3/4″ X 4 1/4 X 5″ Tall, with the lid on. A great early piece of English Brown Stoneware. The box is sprigged with a pair of Dolphins on two sides and Venus rising from the sea on the other two. The handle on the lid is a resting Lion. There is no damage, cracks, chips, scratches, etc. The rim decoration appears to be a flowery wreath. The base is plain. No maker is indicated.
