Beautiful 12″ x 8″ x 6 wooden box featuring classic campaign-style brass strapping, corner reinforcements, and decorative brass rosettes. This handsome chest has a rich, aged appearance with warm wood tones and gleaming brass hardware that gives it a distinctive military/explorer aesthetic. It is in very good condition to likely be over 100 years old; we have replaced one tack to the brass upper right — almost completely unnoticeable — but we strive to be very transparent, especially with vintage and antique items. Inside the lid is the original inscription: “Warlord Gurkha Rare Estate Collection, Established 1887, Limited Edition” – referencing the legendary heritage of Gurkha cigars, which traces its roots to 1887 and the fearless Gurkha warriors of Nepal. Here is some interesting background on these pieces. Gurkha is an American cigar brand founded by K. Hansotia in the late 20th century, but the cigars themselves are rolled in the Dominican Republic, with some lines made in Nicaragua or Honduras. The wooden boxes (including the brass-bound “Warlord” and “Rare Estate Collection” editions) were typically manufactured in the Dominican Republic, China, or Spain (for higher-end cedar boxes) to the brand’s specifications. Manufacture of these humidor presentation boxes for their. “Warlord Gurkha” is one of Gurkha’s high-end cigar blends (bold, full-bodied). “Rare Estate Collection” and the 1887 date refer to the brand’s claimed heritage: Gurkha traces its roots to 1887, when British colonial soldiers in India/Nepal were said to have rolled cigars and named them after the legendary Gurkha warriors. A more modern-day company, Hansotia & Company, established in 1989, markets heavily on this 1887 story. Whew, that’s quite a history.
