Antiques & Uncommon Treasure. Antique French Needlepoint & Burled Wood Sewing or Work Box, Cigar Box, c1830-50. The wood on this magnificent work box (or perhaps tobacco box) is exquisite! A pristine veneer over a thick wooden construction, the grain is as beautiful as if it were old tortoise shell, isn’t it. Variation in color ranges cognac to chocolate and it’s in remarkably fine condition for age. 1830-50 era needlework under glass which is mounted up top is what makes me think it’s a sewing or work box. No lock, and a charming turned wood knob on front. It could, however, be used for cigars. However you chose to designate it, you’ll love it. I brought this one home from Paris some time back. It is from my private’stash’. Very good to excellent condition for age and type. The old “Romance” genre scene in needlepoint is fine work, smaller but not quite petitpoint – somewhere half between. It’s done on an openwork canvas as you can see. The stitches neat and in fine condition. Covered by glazing, not a chip nor hairline in the glass, no damage to report. Measurements are noted on the photos, but it is 9.5″ x 7.5″ and is 5.5 tall when closed. Thank you for your patience. French Art Deco rectangular chromed brass box with brass and leather decorations, vintage 1930s. The hinge box is lined with wood and it will receive cigars. It can also have other uses: trinket box, jewelry box or decorative box. It has no signature or inscriptions. It has an age patina on the chromed parts, one down corner is damaged and there are two stains on the wood inside the lid. Width: 17 cm / 6.75. Depth: 14.5 cm / 5.80. Antiques & Uncommon Treasure. Fab Antique French TAHAN Napoleon III 12 Cigar Presenter Box, Chest, Tantalus. Fabulous antique French TAHAN marked Napoleon III or Victorian era 11 7/8 wide cigar presenter chest or tantalus in ebony or ebonized parquetry veneers, ornate boulle style inlays and five sliding cigar trays inside! It seems impossible for one of these to stay in our inventory more than a few days or weeks. I’m sure it will be no different for this Napoleon III era c. It is large and elegant, 11 7/8″ wide, 8 3/4″ front to back (at the base) and 8 1/4 tall on 4 turned wood feet. The double-hinged hardware lifts the top and folds it back, but also braces it at a perfect aesthetic angle as only the finest of these do. The French are always aware of aesthetic! Working lock with original key allows you to ceremonially unlock and open the chest to display and offer up to sixty 5.5 cigars from the 5 original fitted shelves within. Inside the lid is a metallic paper label reading. Tahan, one of the most notable makers in France at the time and highly sought after. Gorgeous inlays, a glorious decorative chest, even if cigars aren’t really your thing. Very good to excellent condition throughout, age and type considered. Two of the inner shelves are missing their little turned wood pulls and it appears that two shelves have old repaired breaks/splits but are solid, stable and perfectly usable. We normally see the inner lock plate with engraved maker markings, this one with a paper label for Tahan so, though we hate to say it, it is possible that someone just came across the label and placed it there (most common is that paper labels were affixed to the bottom so it could also have just been moved to a more visible location). A few small nips or chips to the flared base of the box, some slight surface scuffs to the veneers but nothing missing that I can see. See images for all measurements. Antiques & Uncommon Treasure. French Figural Boulle Chocolatier’s Box, Work, Sewing or Cigar. Such a gorgeous Napoleon III c. 1850-70s boulle box, basket handle and opulent brass and colorful boulle includes figures at each outer corner. Hinged lift top and a hinged basket-like handle, it would have initially contained a selection of sweet delicacies. Most likely a gift boxed set from the boutiques of the Palais Royal where the elite gathered to shop and to attend theatre, or perhaps along the way to Opera Garnier, each in Paris. Prettiest one ever, I’d expect it to have had a Boissier stamp, but do not find one. Boissier was the finest chocolatier of 19th century Paris, and remains there along with a museum dedicated to the presentation boxes and history of the confectioner firm. The old boxes made with incredible beauty, or simpler ones in card and paper and glass – meant to be kept as a souvenir of the event or giver. This one has burled wood interior and is in superb condition. Full measurements noted on the photos. Very good to excellent condition throughout. The box base is raised on a frame of dore brass with bun feet, and each of the 4 side panels are complete and fabulously designed – the celeste blue of the boulle is a reconstituted and dyed protein – casein or pulverized horn-based, which the French used in that era. The white inlays and figures are mother of pearl. Polishes very nicely, bright. Lift-up knob in same bright brass as is the hinged handle. Jewel-like, it is 8″ long by 5 5/8″ and with the graduated height form, it is 4 tall plus the height of the handle. No missing boulle – all 4 sides and top are excellent. Very slight convex to the lid seems definitely to be original to the design.
