RARE 19th CENTURY DERBY SILVER CO. BULLDOG FIGURAL TOBACCO BOX HUMIDOR
CENTURY DERBY SILVER CO. BULLDOG FIGURAL TOBACCO BOX HUMIDOR. Measures approximately 6 high (to the bulldogs ear) by 5 5/16 wide by 6 1/8 deep. Signed on the underside Derby Silver Co. It also features the impressed numbers 90 and 3406. This silverplated tobacco box/humidor is in excellent original condition. The bulldog has wonderful brown/black glass eyes. There are two round-headed screws which hold the lid down over the compartment under the bulldog. One of them is brass-colored and I assume is a replacement. The other one is what I believe is probably the original silver-colored one. The Derby Silver Company was founded in 1872, and began operations on Shelton’s Canal Street one year later. The company soon outgrew its quarters and constructed a larger building, which still stands on Bridge Street, Shelton, in 1877 near the Housatonic River, overlooking Derby. A number of additions were added in subsequent years. The original Canal Street building was razed when the railroad was built through Shelton in 1888. The company made toilet articles, mirrors, combs, clocks, brushes, table and flatware, tea sets, children’s cups, loving cups (trophies), candlesticks, fruit baskets, dishes, basically anything which was plated by or made of silver. Special orders were constantly commissioned as well. The factory manufactured items for the Sperry and Hutchins trading stamp stores. Showrooms were established in New York City, Chicago, and San Francisco. The logo at the time featured an anchor, often with the words “Derby Silver Company” or its initials surrounding it. In 1898, the plant merged with the International Silver Company, a consortium of Connecticut silver companies. At that time the Derby Silver Company works was known as “Factory B”. Thus, as a rule of thumb, items with the Derby Silver Company logo most likely date from the nineteenth century, while items with the International Silver Company logo, either Derby or Factory B, are from the twentieth. RARE ALFRED DUNHILL HUMIDOR CIGAR BOX. I believe the wood is walnut with cedar lining. This was s gift to the Senior Vice President of Hilton Hotels by jazz and Latin musician Sergio Mendes in late 1970’s. The plaque reads: Henri Lewin, my sincere thanks, Sergio Mendes. Rare Antique Russian Ptd COSSACKS Tobacco Humidor Box Vishnyakov Imperial Era. Offering a very handsome Antique Russian Painted Humidor/Tobacco Box. Signed inside by celebrated VISHNYAKOV– awarded numerous gold Imperial medals. Retains original interior tin foil paper. Well loved– inside retains the lingering aroma of tobacco. Lid– hand painted– portraying Russian woman peasant and two Cossacks. One playing the accordion and one dancing– kicking up his heels. Rare to see Cossack dancing on Russian boxes– usually painted are Troika sleds. Wear commensurate with age and use. Thumping, bumps and wear on corners– see images. Crazing on painted lid, but painting itself is in very good condition. Hinges are strong and stable. Approx– 5 3/8″ by 3 3/8″ by 3 1/4 h. Hard to find early signed Box. Wonderful scene of animated Russian country life. Rare to find Humidor/Tobacco box with original silver foil. We wrap all our items very carefully. Magnificent & rare antique French Victorian or Napoleon III era 12 tantalus style cigar chest or box with elegant ebonized veneers, ornate inlaid lid & serpentine front and opulent veneer lined interior with five trays slotted to hold up to 65 cigars! One of three similar boxes that we now have available in the jet black ebonized veneers & ornate inlay, one of the others a marked Paul SORMANI piece. The Sormani name has a long and lauded history as as one of the finest of the fine where French ebanistes or cabinet & box makers are concerned, ranking right up there with Tahan, Vervelle & Diehl to name a few of the most well known. This piece bears no maker marking, normally found on the inside brass or bronze locking plate. If you take a look at our other that is marked by Sormani, you’ll see they are so similar that one could just assume they’re from the same or equally renowned maker. There are two small spots of veneer chipping visible in the pictures, right and left front corners of the lid. The chest is raised on triangular shaped ebonized wood feet and I can’t be certain if they are original. Otherwise, just as you see it with no missing or damaged’cream’ colored inlay that I can see and the interior is in pristine shape. Working lock & key, too! See pictures for all measurements.
