Rare 19th Century French Antique Napoleon III Music Box Humidor. This marvelous piece intrigues and delights. Made of black lacquered wood with a beautiful red-tinted patina on the doors. Hexagon in shape, the humidor opens by 6 doors. Each door is adorned on the outside with a lyre. The inside of each door displays floral motif mounts with three rings and a lower plate to hold cigars. The humidor sits atop an undulating base decorated with two studded garlands. Garlands also adorn the top of the humidor and the knob that was once used to open the doors (now only one door opens using the knob, the others must be opened manually). A lever on the side of the base starts and stops the music. The music box is wound using a keyhole found on the bottom of the base. The music box functions and the original key is included. The music itself is quite charming. We can send an audio file of the song on request. The humidor is in good antique condition. Only one door opens with the mechanism, the other doors open manually. One door is missing the cigar-holding rings on the inside. There are a couple of cracks in the base, some nicks and scuffs, and some damage to top wood panel. Dimensions: Height: 10.5 in (27 cm); Diameter (top): 6 in (15 cm); Diameter (base): 7 in (18 cm). We thus guarantee you will incur no surprise import charges from U. CENTURY DERBY SILVER CO. BULLDOG FIGURAL TOBACCO BOX HUMIDOR. Measures approximately 6 high (to the bulldogs ear) by 5 5/16 wide by 6 1/8 deep. Signed on the underside Derby Silver Co. It also features the impressed numbers 90 and 3406. This silverplated tobacco box/humidor is in excellent original condition. The bulldog has wonderful brown/black glass eyes. There are two round-headed screws which hold the lid down over the compartment under the bulldog. One of them is brass-colored and I assume is a replacement. The other one is what I believe is probably the original silver-colored one. The Derby Silver Company was founded in 1872, and began operations on Shelton’s Canal Street one year later. The company soon outgrew its quarters and constructed a larger building, which still stands on Bridge Street, Shelton, in 1877 near the Housatonic River, overlooking Derby. A number of additions were added in subsequent years. The original Canal Street building was razed when the railroad was built through Shelton in 1888. The company made toilet articles, mirrors, combs, clocks, brushes, table and flatware, tea sets, children’s cups, loving cups (trophies), candlesticks, fruit baskets, dishes, basically anything which was plated by or made of silver. Special orders were constantly commissioned as well. The factory manufactured items for the Sperry and Hutchins trading stamp stores. Showrooms were established in New York City, Chicago, and San Francisco. The logo at the time featured an anchor, often with the words “Derby Silver Company” or its initials surrounding it. In 1898, the plant merged with the International Silver Company, a consortium of Connecticut silver companies. At that time the Derby Silver Company works was known as “Factory B”. Thus, as a rule of thumb, items with the Derby Silver Company logo most likely date from the nineteenth century, while items with the International Silver Company logo, either Derby or Factory B, are from the twentieth. This is a very old antique primitive Humidor box with mirrored underside and copper insert. From the early 19th Century. Humidor measures 9W x 5H x 5D. The exterior shows worn edges, scratches and possibly an old repair, please see photos. The mirror measures 7 3/4W x 4H and shows age related wear. The copper liner is 7 3/4W x 3 7/8D x 2H.
