Antiques & Uncommon Treasure. Antique French Needlepoint & Burled Wood Sewing or Work Box, Cigar Box, c1830-50. The wood on this magnificent work box (or perhaps tobacco box) is exquisite! A pristine veneer over a thick wooden construction, the grain is as beautiful as if it were old tortoise shell, isn’t it. Variation in color ranges cognac to chocolate and it’s in remarkably fine condition for age. 1830-50 era needlework under glass which is mounted up top is what makes me think it’s a sewing or work box. No lock, and a charming turned wood knob on front. It could, however, be used for cigars. However you chose to designate it, you’ll love it. I brought this one home from Paris some time back. It is from my private’stash’. Very good to excellent condition for age and type. The old “Romance” genre scene in needlepoint is fine work, smaller but not quite petitpoint – somewhere half between. It’s done on an openwork canvas as you can see. The stitches neat and in fine condition. Covered by glazing, not a chip nor hairline in the glass, no damage to report. Measurements are noted on the photos, but it is 9.5″ x 7.5″ and is 5.5 tall when closed.
