This is a gorgeous quality Agresti, Florence Italy Briarwood burled wood box with beautiful grain. Burled wood is rare and often very valuable. It forms as a type of tree growth caused by stress, injury, or fungus, resulting in twisted, swirling, and highly decorative internal grain patterns. It is a medium brown stain with inlay Dentil / Checker Banding. The repeating, block-like geometric pattern along the outer edge is created by alternating light and dark wood segments to mimic classical dentil molding or block-border checkering. This piece was meticulously crafted by the prestigious Barbeitos workshop in Lisbon (Lisboa), Portugal. Every single inch of this heavy, footed brass box tells the epic story of the Portuguese Age of Discovery. It serves as an incredible historical narrative captured in high-relief metalwork. &####127477;&####127481; HISTORICAL ICONOGRAPHY ON EVERY PANEL. THE LID (TOP): Prominently features the iconic Tower of Belém (Torre de Belém), the historic 16th-century fortress and ceremonial gateway to Lisbon. Floating above it is a traditional Portuguese Caravel (Nau) sailing vessel, emblazoned with the Cross of the Order of Christ. THE FRONT: A dramatic, high-relief mythological maritime scene depicting a caravel caught in a tempest. It features the Greek god of the wind (Boreas) and the fierce sea giant Adamastor-the legendary personification of the rough Cape of Good Hope from Luís de Camões’ epic poem, “The Lusiads”. THE RIGHT SIDE: Three beautifully rendered architectural Gothic arches containing portraits of historical legends: Prince Henry the Navigator, explorer Vasco da Gama, and the epic poet Luís de Camões. The smooth bottom plate is cleanly hand-stamped with the prestigious maker hallmark: “Barbeitos / LISBOA”. Lining: The interior is completely lined with thick, original, pressed-cork insulation panels on both the base and lid. Historically, this protected fine cigars and tobacco by regulating humidity. Excellent antique condition with wonderful structural integrity. The hinge operates smoothly, and the lid shuts securely. The brass shows a gorgeous, untouched natural patina with minor surface tarnish and oxidation spots on the bottom, which adds to its authentic historic character. The internal cork lining sides are incredibly well-preserved, fully intact, and completely free of major cracking, the interior cork top has some cracks and is warped. Estate sale find, it’s got years of household either grease or smoke residue, I didn’t d not want to clean, was afraid of damaging gilt. But otherwise pristine, and not overly dirty it’s actually very clean, just needs proper cleaning to bring out luster. Phenomenal find and piece. Cedar lined The ones made for letters and diary repository were made approximately around 1850 the cigar box version approximately 1870. I believe same maker, one was for men one for women. The repository has material inside that’s stamped by maker, where these are cedar lined.

The elongated rectangular form measures. 13″ long. 4″ deep. 2.75 high Crafted from solid oak with beautiful linear grain throughout, this humidor has a strong Arts & Crafts presence with clear Art Nouveau styling in the hardware. The lid is decorated with sculptural brass serpents in relief – a dramatic and uncommon design element. The front features an elaborate, organic-form brass escutcheon surrounding the keyhole. The interior is fully oak-lined, retaining its original natural wood surface. No modern lining has been added. Antique 19th Century Brass Engraved, Lined, Humidor/Pipe/Tobacco/Cigar Box -RARE FIND. This antique humidor, tobacco related or other storage box is a fine work of craftsmanship and is a very rare find. The age is based on research which information is very limited. Brass/Copper covered box, reinforced riveted corners with engravings on four areas. There is a latch on the front that would accept a padlock. The top cover with beveled edges, has an engraving of a man smoking a very long pipe. The front side has an engraved scene also related to pipes and tobacco. The side ends have the same engraved scene of books, literature and a pipe. The inside is lined with silver tin or other base metal. The bottom is wood, as other parts may be wood as well beneath the brass covering. Measures 10-1/2″ x 7-1/2″ x 3-1/2 Tall Weight: 3lbs, 5 oz. The box is in very good condition, has an aged patina which could probably be polished to really shine if desired. The inside cover has some traces of red paint. See all photos for more details.
