Antique, English Burr Walnut and Brass Cigar Cabinet / Humidor c. 1880
About as fine as they get, this large Burr Walnut cigar cabinet is a magnificent quality box beautifully made. Each corner has a carved column with a polished brass base and brass mounts around the columns, all beautifully hand engraved. All of the drawer pulls are again hand-engraved. This cabinet would have come from a very fine house, this type of box was used for entertaining, the top two drawers easily accessed by releasing the top (unlocked) shorter bar. These two drawers would have been placed on the table, you can see that they are finished in burr walnut on all sides, used to serve; the underside reveals Satinwood used to finish. The bottom (locked) drawers are accessed with the working key releasing the long bar which then allows the drawers to be accessed. Various cigars would be stored in these drawers and a variety placed in the top two drawers ready for table service by the Butler. The interior of the drawers is lined in Cedar wood which is what kept cigars fresh; this is not officially a Humidor as these are modern inventions to regulate the humidity within; it is the Cedar lining that did this job well over 100 years ago. Each of the drawers has an adjustable / removable divider to customise the interior’s configuration. The drawers will accommodate a maximum cigar length of 6 1/4. Truly the finest in excellent condition, minor wear commensurate with age. Dating to the late Victorian period. The footprint measures 17 1/2″ x 10 1/2″ x 15 tall. Antique Victorian Wood Cigar Caddy Box, Table Top Cabinet, Lockable Front Doors
An outstanding antique 19th century Victorian wooden cigar caddy box. Unique cabinet form with sarcophagus styling to the top. Double front doors, retains a working lock and key. Beautifully carved from walnut perhaps, finished with gorgeous detailing along the edges. Superb hardware throughout, brass or bronze finished in silver gilt. With exquisite openwork at the hinges and ornate lock escutcheons to the front doors. Opening to reveal eight sliding and removable cigar racks, each capable of holding six cigars. Resting on four bun feet. Overall in good condition with general wear commensurate with use and age. The back having a couple of old cracks to the wood panel as shown. A 19th century smoker’s caddy with huge and beautifully carved German Shepherd dog hinged to open for tobacco or cigar storage inside hollowed out pot. An angled server for matches and a brass cup for spent matches and ashes or cigar clippings. This one is superb! Yes, tip of one ear has been chipped ages ago, could be restored quite easily. No other flaws to note. Glass eyes bring him alive, don’t they? He’s chained, and rests one front foot above the squared off old log that comprises the 11 wide front piece, with a paw showing along bottom, too. Very good to excellent condition for age and type. That he’s got one nipped ear only is a bit of a miracle after so long a time. Obviously well cared for and cherished. The brass pot shows some old evidence of ash. He’s definitely served well. The interior of the tobacco compartment is clear, no residue, no odors. I’ve noted maximum depth on the photos, and that it is 8″ tall as it sits, and 11″ wide. Yes, some very old and inactive (treated) woodworm holes here or there. Nothing spongy or ruined about him. Just that Old European charm of age. You will LOVE this one! We’re easy to deal with.
