A splendid late 19th century (1800s) hand carved Black Forest 14.5 tall cigar cabinet, chest, presentation or service box with an Animalier style grouping of carved game birds up top, Fruits of the Hunt style hung birds with hunting bugles or powder horns, canteens on the front doors and six slide-out trays to hold up to sixty cigars total! Birds are one of the more prolific of the Black Forest figures, others include the always popular bear figures and the more rare fox and dog or hounds. The Fruits of the Hunt themes are always popular, beautifully done on the front cabinet doors with the game, hung as if fresh from the hunt. All of the original interior cigar trays remain with the chest and will hold a total of 60 cigars, the grooves are 4 7/8 in length, and each slides smoothly and well into the grooved slot construction of the interior. A few flaws with this one but nothing overly dramatic and wonderful with its 100 or so years. One of two fabulous old Black Forest chests that we’re adding today, the other a large jewelry piece with chamois or deer figures on top and edelweiss flower accents. If you’ve followed us for a while you know I’m a big fan of the old hand carved “Black Forest” items that come to us from 19th century Switzerland, Germany, parts of France and Italy, where they pleased the Grand Tour tourists and still please us all today. These hand carved treasures range from whimsical small bears to large and elaborate mantel clocks, wall clocks, wall plaques showing the most awesome anatomical studies of stag, fowl, “fruits of the hunt”. I’ve got more to list so look through the vast collection. I’ve just used quite a few piece in our own 2nd home decoration , Rocky Mountains location, and love the look as well as the heritage since my own ancestors hail from that region and others. The pieces work well in Country Manor, French Country, Ski Lodge or Hunt Lodge and even in a den or office. Everything from a pocket watch case to huge plaques – from needle and thread holders to cigar caddy – these decorative objects survive today a testament to the artisan’s craft of carving wood. Very good condition for age and type, with a really beautiful old patina to the exterior carved wood cabinet that is light to medium in finish, perhaps Linden wood, or a lighter walnut. Perfect for rustic, cabin, lodge, Country French or English manor decor. There are a few worm/bug holes visible in the base and a few other areas, old and nothing active so no need to worry about them (and they don’t effect the piece structurally). There is also an old restoration to the left side bird’s head (grouping on the lid). Quite cleanly done, it doesn’t detract. We have taken it into consideration in our price, however and so a lovely deal on this one to be had. A few other small chips likely with its age and the front doors do not lock due to a bit of age shrinking though they do close completely and the old skeleton key turns the lock (just don’t meet close enough for the lock to catch the other door). There are also a few sections of the molding trim that have been replaced, one on bottom of left cabinet door, bottom of left side and all four sections on the back of the box/chest. There is also some chipping to the right edge of the right side cabinet door with screw holes visible (appears that someone moved the placement of the screws in an attempt to have the doors lock securely). Measurements: 14.5″ tall with figural top; 12.75″ widest and 8.75 front to back. Nice sized and all measurements are noted in the images. We’re easy to deal with. You are very important!
