Antique Swiss Black Forest HC Large Cigar Chest, Tantalus, Presentation Box for 40 Cigars. All items and photos are the express property of Antiques & Uncommon Treasure. Beautifully carved and very well preserved late 1800s to as late as 1915 cigar chest with lift-out tray to hold up to 40 cigars. Floral bouquet carved up top, and all-over adornments details. The original key still works the old lock. We’ve put up lots of photos from all angles, and measurements are noted on the photos. Very good to excellent condition, with a nod to an old repaired crack along one of the lines of perforated top panel of the interior cigar tray. It is strong and barely visible, but we want you to know it is there. A tip of one leaf of the bouquet cartouche is gone, as well (see images). The florals are really beautifully carved in a full relief, life-like. Lock engages and original key still attends it. We’re easy to deal with. You are very important! A spectacular 1880s to earliest 1900s hand carved Swiss Black Forest lift-top cigar cabinet, 11.5 wide and with 3 trays, holds 30 large cigars for service. Beautifully carved on all sides, florals and forest look, a monogrammed shield cartouche up top. I know you’re going to ask me the initials. I’m guessing at it, as I can make it be TPC, or HB, either one. You’ll have to see what you make of it. Very good to excellent condition for age and type. The chest is raised on bun feet, and there really isn’t any warp, cracks, hairlines. It would have initially had 6 trays, but it looks balanced with the 3 excellent ones that remain with it. They’re all carved nicely, too. One thing to note is that the actual lock mechanism is missing. The pin half of the lock plate is there, and keyhole, but the lock has been removed. Doesn’t hurt the look any, as you have to go searching under the fold-back lid to see it’s missing. Photos show it from all sides, and it’s in very fine shape throughout. As you can see, it’s in a medium light wood, and it shows off its serpentine edging and bas relief carvings very nicely. All measurements noted on the photos. We’re easy to deal with. RARE Antique HC Black Forest Cigar Chest, Box, with Hound, Dog, 4 Server Trays

RARE Antique HC Black Forest Cigar Chest, Box, with Hound, Dog, 4 Server Trays, 32 Cigars. All items and photos are the express property of Antiques & Uncommon Treasure. A rare and spectacular find, the carved Black Forest dogs are about the rarest subject to find, and we all love them. This little guy sits atop a beautifully crafted and very well preserved cigar chest (not a humidor, no moisture apparatus, remember) or serving box. Each of the 4 slide-out trays remain in excellent and undamaged state, and it holds a total of 32 cigars, up to 4.5 in length. Old as it is, and size, it was likely a cheroot cabinet. The hinged top lifts up and folds back to reveal the serving trays. All measurements are noted on the photos, but it’s 9.5″ tallest, 9.5″ widest (at feet). No chips, no breaks, no hairlines or shrinkage or warping. It has a working lock, but at listing time I do not have a key to work it or attend it. We do have a stash of 19gh century keys for these old casket locks, but so far we haven’t got one fitted to this. We’ll continue to search one out, but as it stands now, it comes without key. If we find one, we’ll annotate the listing and price. Very good to excellent condition throughout. I find no chips or loss to the carvings, though it’s likely perhaps a tiny nip on end of leaf or a little rough spot is there somewhere. I do notice on our photos that the light seems to make it look like one eye is missing a little glass bead. In fact, neither has or had glass beads, and it’s just angle of light. The pupils are carved as recesses, so one could certainly set a small black glass bead in each should you wish to have him have glass eyes. It was not originally thus, and it is not a flaw you’re seeing on the photos – just a glare. Full measurements are noted on the photos. Not sure the breed of that darling dog, but he’s without damage. Again, dogs are rare! We’ve fully cleaned the box. There are no odors at all. We’re easy to deal with. You are very important! A late 1800s to perhaps 1915 hand carved cigar chest or caddy, server, from the famed Swiss carvers of the Black Forest region. Superbly crafted and preserved, but it has somehow lost its inner cigar trays over time. The slider bars are there on the inside, so we know it was fitted with trays initially. They do sometimes break, but my suspicion is it was re-purposed and the trays simply lost or forgotten. The birds on top are really perfect – lifelike anatomy, little if any damage. I’ve shown them from all angles so you can see how delicate and charming they are. Measurements are noted on photos bu tit is 9.5″ longest, 6.5″ widest, and 8.5 to top of the carved birds. Very good to excellent condition with exception of the missing trays. I keep looking at this one and thinking what a wonderful jewelry display it would be just with the flat oak panels and no cigar openings. Of course, one can still store cigars inside. The lid lifts up and hinges back, as shown in our photos. I find that only the tall fronds of leaves behind the birds seem to have lost their tips. Wings and beaks are in lovely shape, as well as tails. Oh, and there is an age hairline on the top, running in from the right edge. I’ve shown it well in one of the photos for your review. It’s from the wood aging and shrinkage that sometimes will crack, not from being dropped. Legs are all carved and fully intact. Kind of want to find 2 small decanters and a couple cordials and turn this one into a desktop bar for cognac, liqueur. You’ll have a perfect way to use it! We’re easy to deal with.
