A wonderful circa late 1910s to 1920s desk-top humidor box made of brass or bronze and embellished with a raised relief design, a beautiful Art Deco motif with linear and curved elements that hint at the sinuous lines of the Jugendstil style. Made by Carl Deffner of Esslingen, Germany, the underside is marked with his crossed axe and shield mark. The box in oval in shape, and it closes securely with a hinged lid that certainly seems to be airtight, as these old humidor boxes should be. It was designed to be used with a blotter sheet, to which a few drops of water could be added to help maintain the proper humidity levels. The inside of the box is lined in a white metal, likely tin. Measures approximately 5″ x 3 7/8″ at its widest and stands a little over 3 tall. It’s in very good condition with the natural patina mostly intact and no flaws or damage to note except for a small ding on one side which isn’t readily obvious unless you look at the underside.
