An unusual dog box / cigar box holder – possibly Conta & Boehm but definitely a European maker. Great detail and color throughout with a very expressive face to dog. Unmarked anywhere the lid has two chips to underside interior lip (see photos). Ill add a photo of interior as it was blurry when I tried to load – interior has factory separations to the walls where it meets the base (fired that way over 100 years ago). Cigar box measures 8 1/4 long by 4 1/2 inches wide at base and stands 5 1/2 inches tall. Dates to about 1840 or 1850 era – a stunner!! THIS IS AN AMERICAN CUT GLASS AND ENAMELED STERLING SILVER TOBACCO JAR CIGAR HUMIDOR MADE BY DURGIN AROUND 1895. THIS JAR HAS A CUT GLASS BODY WITH A STERLING LID THAT HAS AN APPLIED FIGURAL ENAMELED SCENE WITH A PIPE, LIT SMOKING CIGAR, MATCHES AND A MATCH STRIKER. I KNOW THIS PIECE IS DURGIN BECAUSE ABOUT 15 YEARS AGO I HAD ANOTHER ONE EXACTLY LIKE IT WITH A DIFFERENT ENAMELED SMOKING SCENE PLAQUE. THE STERLING LID ON THAT ONE HAD A MONOGRAM WITH A DATE OF 1895. IT IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION WITH NO DAMAGE. THE STERLING LID HAS A SUBSTANTIAL WEIGHT OF 4.7 TROY OUNCES. A unique 19th century box of silver plated brass with Dutch men, women and children dancing, drinking and sitting at tables full of food and drink, even a child washing in a basin. Measures 7-3/4″ long, 3-3/4″ tall and 5-3/4 wide, inside is cedar lined. Bottom is silver plated and has designer’s hallmark. Condition is excellent, lots of patina, extremely well crafted and has many uses including jewelry box, very handsome on a desk filled with pens and pencils or on a coffee table filled with cigars. BEAR TOBACCO JAR MUSIC BOX. Black Forest Figural Wood Carved Humidor c. This is an Awesome BEAR TOBACCO JAR MUSIC BOX Black Forest Figural Wood Carved circa 1950. This tobacco jar music box. Is dark brown in color, with some decorative color accents, (photographed in natural light, the photos appear lighter than actual color). Is well modeled in deep relief with very good carving and detail. Depicts a seated bear carved in Black Forest style. Has an expressive face, a mouth with teeth, glass paperweight style eyes, ears straight up. Has a custom top, the head lifts open, and is fitted to the body; the base container, with a brass hinge, is the body of the bear with four outstretched paws; the base is hollowed out as a tobacco jar. Has a Thorens MUSIC BOX built into the base, which is activated by a string attached to the top; when the lid is opened the music box is activated- it plays There is No Place Like Home and Way Down Upon the Swanee River. The music box has been serviced, cleaned and oiled, and it works. Once the lid is closed the two songs stop after being played through. Has a round plinth elevated base with three small rounded feet; the underside has the winder key and access panel to the music box. Tall x 5.5 In. Wide x 6.5 In. The estimated date is circa 1950. The BEAR TOBACCO JAR MUSIC BOX Black Forest is in very good condition. Condition status includes minimal normal wear and rubbing. Overall, this work is sound, having no chips, cracks, or major defects, and having had no apparent repairs or restorations. Please see all photos which are a part of this description. In the 1800s the wood carving industry of Switzerland started in the town of Brienz. By the end of the 1800s it had become the driving force for this industry in Switzerland and Germany. Swiss wood carvers became world renowned and featured at many international exhibitions. In Europe, Black Forest carvings (wares) became a symbol of luxury and wealth. The finest pieces of Black Forest carving were often found in Royal collections and elite collectors homes (usually Victorian world travelers).
