We can never keep this style cigar serving chest in inventory for long, theyre always so popular and especially this time of year. This is a fine 19th c. Victorian to early Edwardian era Black Forest hand carved chest with the original four sliding shelves or trays, ready to serve up 32 cigars. It is not a humidor, but is a chest that would have been brought out after dinner when the ladies retired to another room and the gentlemen stayed at table or den for a cigar and mens talk. Served with price, this one is the style that would have been found in any well-pointed home or lodge. The carving definitely Black Forest, with vines, foliage & edelweiss carved into the front and side panels, a raised or applied group of foliage & edelweiss flowers centered on the lid. Rare to find these anymore that dont have some restorations or breaks (with a nod to the age/drying splits visible in the lid here). I see only a few other minor flaws to show for its age. A beautiful lighter finish or patina to the old wood. Weve taken the time to clean and lightly wax it, as with all our beautiful old Black Forest carved items, and youll be thrilled to put it to use, or just to display. Very good condition for age and type, with four original sliding trays still inside. Each tray holds eight cigars (the center groove is shorter due to the pulls or knobs but could be used if you so wish for slightly shorter cigars) and the total is 32+ cigars. Double-hinged and with the original lock and working key, this is truly a tantalus, though not a humidor as there is no soaker, etc.. It is for service, not to keep cigars moist. There are also a few old bug or worm holes in the wood, nothing active but they are there (mostly along the lower part of the front panel). It does have a few flaws but most to after all these years and, as you can see, its lost little of its visual and decorative appeal. Working lock complete with key. Measurements on the photos.
