From the Soft Maple family of Maples this hardwood is of medium density and provides an artist’s pallet for adding color. It is bone white and can easily be stained a variety of colors unlike any other hardwood on earth. The curl figure varies in degree from a light curl to a heavy tiger maple with flamed maple in between. Speculative cause of the curl is the wind which causes the tree to sway continuously while growing – causing the cross-grain striations in the wood. It is difficult to machine and chips up easily when planed. It needs to be sanded with TLC. It’s growing range is from the Midwest to the Eastern Appalachians of the U. It is traditionally used in musical instruments – guitars, violins, mandolins and banjos. We are proud to use this specie in our line of fine quality cigar humidors.
