Oak 3-Compartment Cigarette / Cigar Box, Fitted Interior, c. 1900

Welcome to Antiques & Moore! This listing is for an attractive late 19th or early 20th Century oak cigarette/cigar box or humidor with three lift-top compartments with fitted interiors. The box is made of quarter-sawn oak with beveled top edges and a brass handle on center top. The box is called a humidor although it does not have an “hygrometer” inside to measure and maintain proper humidity and can only be used for normal storage. The box does have an unusual feature in the form of a brass striking plate on the inside lid of each side section used for lighting matches. The box has excellent brass hinges on each section that open and close correctly. There is a locking mechanism on the center section and when the side sections are closed first, the center section will lock each section closed. Box has a brass plaque attached on the back lower edge that reads Alexander Clark, Fenchurch St. Measures 5″ high, 12″ long and 8 deep. Weighs 4.3 pounds. This nice humidor box is in excellent Estate condition with no noted flaws. The original protective cover that would have been on the bottom of the box has been removed with evidence of cover remaining that we have not tried to remove. The key locking mechanism is intact and key is provided. The dog is brass with a gilded finish and glass eyes. The roof of the house is hinged and it opens and closes correctly. The wooden body is oak with a light finish and has ebonized (dark stained) wood trimmed corners, top and bottom edges and around key hole. Measures 5 3/8″ high (at sides of roof), 6 1/2″ high (to peak of roof), 9 1/2″ long (base platform) and 7″ wide (base platform). Weighs 2.5 pounds. This unusual cigar box is in very good to excellent Estate condition with no major flaws. There are a few minor signs of normal wear to the box including one area on the ebonized edge of the box (left side near front) where there is a minor section with wear to the varnish and a couple of faint streaks on the same side of roof where there is wear to the varnish, however, both areas are hardly noticed. There is also expected wear to the gilded finish on the dog. Have been in the Antiques business for over 30 years and try to describe our items as accurately as possible. Welcome to Antiques & Moore! THIS LISTING IS FOR A NICE ANTIQUE ENGLISH WALNUT CASE FULLY LINED HUMIDOR WITH KEY. BOX MEASURES 11″ LONG, 8 1/4″ WIDE AND 6 1/2 DEEP. WEIGHS 9.6 POUNDS. THIS NICE HUMIDOR HAS A BEAUTIFULLY GRAINED WALNUT CASE AND ORIGINAL KEY. THE BOX HAS A LONG BRASS “PIANO” HINGE THAT OPENS AND CLOSES CORRECTLY. THERE IS A CHAIN THAT CONNECTS THE TOP TO THE BOTTOM TO HOLD THE BOX IN AN OPEN POSITION. THE INTERIOR OF THE LID IS LINED WITH A SLIGHTLY DISCOLORED CHALKY TYPE SURFACE THAT KEEPS MOISTURE FROM THE CIGARS AND HAS PROBABLY DISCOLORED FROM THE FUMES OF THE TOBACCO OF THE CIGARS. THE BASE IS LINED WITH A WHITE GLASS ON THE FOUR SIDES AND ON THE BOTTOM AND THIS LINING IS IN EXCELLENT, UNDAMAGED CONDITION. THE BOX/CASE HAS A NICE BRASS LOCKING MECHANISM WITH A BRASS COVERED KEY HOLE AND COMES WITH ITS ORIGINAL KEY. THIS NICE HUMIDOR IS IN VERY GOOD ESTATE CONDITION AND IN APPROPRIATE CONDITION TO BE USED TO STORE CIGARS. THERE IS AN AGE/STRESS CRACK THAT EXTENDS ACROSS THE LENGTH OF THE TOP WHICH IS OFTEN FOUND ON 19th CENTURY BOXES REGARDLESS OF THE TYPE WOOD USED IN CONSTRUCTION. THERE IS ALSO A SLIGHT SEPARATION IN THE SEAM WHERE THE WOOD JUST BELOW THE TOP OF THE BOX. THERE ARE A COUPLE OF FAINT SURFACE SCRATCHES AND MINOR DINGS IN THE WOOD FROM NORMAL WEAR AND A VERY SLIGHT NICK ON THE BOTTOM OF ONE BACK CORNER.
