Delightful Antique Black Forest Victorian to Edwardian era 8 5/8 cigar cabinet, chest, presentation or service box with elegant serpentine shaping, highly ornate foliate carving and raised or applied flower & leaf grouping on top. We’ve had and offered a wide variety of these great old Black Forest boxes in the past featuring a host of different and wonderful forest critters, the foxes are a personal favorite for me though everyone loves the stags, bears, other animals. The Fruits of the Hunt themes are also popular, this one with a foliate motif throughout, no animals but a wonderful serpentine shaping and lighter wood finish. Relatively dainty in size but all of the visual & decorative appeal. The lid and front doors open tantalus style, fittings for upright cigars inside and a drawer in the base that has partitions and a covered match compartment. All of the original interior cigar fittings remain with the chest and will hold a total of 36 cigars, eighteen in the rear fittings and nine on each door. A few small flaws but, as you can see, this one is fabulous! If you’ve followed us for a while you know I’m a big fan of the old hand carved “Black Forest” items that come to us from 19th century Switzerland, Germany, parts of France and Italy, where they pleased the Grand Tour tourists and still please us all today. These hand carved treasures range from whimsical small bears to large and elaborate mantel clocks, wall clocks, wall plaques showing the most awesome anatomical studies of stag, fowl, “fruits of the hunt”. I’ve got more to list so look through the vast collection. I’ve just used quite a few piece in our own 2nd home decoration , Rocky Mountains location, and love the look as well as the heritage since my own ancestors hail from that region and others. The pieces work well in Country Manor, French Country, Ski Lodge or Hunt Lodge and even in a den or office. Everything from a pocket watch case to huge plaques – from needle and thread holders to cigar caddy – these decorative objects survive today a testament to the artisan’s craft of carving wood. Very good condition for age and type, with a beautiful lighter finish yet slightly aged patina to the exterior carved wood cabinet, likely Lindon wood, or a lighter walnut. The pull on the lower drawer has a glue repair and there are a few glued restorations around the base where the serpentine sides meet the solid wood bases (above and below the drawer) but they really don’t detract from the piece in any way. The lock & key work but there is no mechanism to keep the left side door from opening when locked (and I don’t see that there ever was). See pictures for all measurements. We’re easy to deal with.
