LID, BRASS FINGER PULL & PAPER. Early 20th century Na ti ve Ame ri can Northeast woodland tribes, indigenous people’s antique, handcrafted sweet grass basketry & decorated boxes. 8 12″ Length x 4″ Height x 4 14 Depth. A simply extraordinary, rare early 20th century antique Native American, Northeast Woodland tribe, dyed, cut sweet grass strand, mosaic, geo-abstract, exterior decorated tobacco humidor/ jewelry/trinket box, with slide top lid and floral, decorative paper lined interior. The box appears to have been’appropriated’ and is an antique, period Ame ri can made rectangular, long wood box with a slide lid and inlaid brass finger pull. These wooden boxes were produced in the late 19th to early 20th century and held a variety of products, from medicines to bottles spices and cooking ingredients. The exterior of the box and its subsequent decoration however, has little, if anything to do with its original designed purpose. The exterior of the box features dyed, multi-colored sweet grass, favored by Native American, Northeast woodland tribal artisans, from coastal and interior Maine, to eastern New Hampshire and Massachusetts. The sweet grass strands are hand dyed and cut, assembled in a decorative mosaic, geo-abstract patterning. Terrific hand decorated sidewalls & color. Left exactly as it was found and with no’in-filling’ of missing sweet grass strands that are now missing. The colors remain original and as they’ve always been. The interior decorative paper is also original to the boxes’ decoration and also has been left as it was found. A truly extraordinary New England Native American handmade cultural artifact. Compelling and undeniable beautiful. Good to Very Good overall antique condition.
