A rare and spectacular find, the carved Black Forest dogs are about the rarest subject to find, and we all love them. This little guy sits atop a beautifully crafted and very well preserved cigar chest (not a humidor, no moisture apparatus, remember) or serving box. Each of the 4 slide-out trays remain in excellent and undamaged state, and it holds a total of 32 cigars, up to 4.5 in length. Old as it is, and size, it was likely a cheroot cabinet. The hinged top lifts up and folds back to reveal the serving trays. All measurements are noted on the photos, but it’s 9.5″ tallest, 9.5″ widest (at feet). No chips, no breaks, no hairlines or shrinkage or warping. It has a working lock, but at listing time I do not have a key to work it or attend it. We do have a stash of 19gh century keys for these old casket locks, but so far we haven’t got one fitted to this. We’ll continue to search one out, but as it stands now, it comes without key. If we find one, we’ll annotate the listing and price. Very good to excellent condition throughout. I find no chips or loss to the carvings, though it’s likely perhaps a tiny nip on end of leaf or a little rough spot is there somewhere. I do notice on our photos that the light seems to make it look like one eye is missing a little glass bead. In fact, neither has or had glass beads, and it’s just angle of light. The pupils are carved as recesses, so one could certainly set a small black glass bead in each should you wish to have him have glass eyes. It was not originally thus, and it is not a flaw you’re seeing on the photos – just a glare. Full measurements are noted on the photos. Not sure the breed of that darling dog, but he’s without damage. Again, dogs are rare! We’ve fully cleaned the box. There are no odors at all. We’re easy to deal with. You are very important!
