A very good looking well-made and functional piece, the Owl’s are some of the most collectable pieces of black forest carved wood. This one is totally original and unrestored other than a clean wax and polish, there are some losses around the owl’s ears and so on. Width:- 18.5cm. Fine antique to vintage Victorian to early Edwardian era Black Forest hand carved 6 7/8 square cigar chest, presenter or tantalus with ornate floral & foliate decoration and four sliding trays to hold up to 24 cigars! Tantalus style, the entire lid and front panels lift up to open completely and display the four sliding cigar trays inside. Each tray with vertical wood dividers to hold a total capacity of twenty-four 5 cigars. The top of the chest with leaf & flower accents in the center. The front and sides panels with carved of vines & leaves. A charming decorative piece whether or not you’re a cigar or tobacco aficionado. Very good condition, age considered. There is a chip to the bottom rim of the lid near the rear right corner and a few small chips to the leaves & flowers on top. There are also two missing vertical dividers on one of the sliding trays. Vintage SWISS Black Forest Chalet CIGAR HUMIDOR Cottage House BOX Hand Carved. This piece is VERY COOL and truly “ONE OF A KIND”.. ! It has two compartments under the roof and a built in lighter inside the chimney. It resembles an old traditional Black Forest Chalet from Switzerland. Some of the key features to identify are the Swiss wooden clogs outside the front door and the large overhanging eaves on the roof, typically seen on cottages in the Black Forest mountain range of the Alps. This beautiful area is well renowned for its enchanting Spas and masterful wood work that led to the invention of the world famous German Cuckoo Clocks. N the inside lid, there is a small painting of the Jesuit Church in Lucerne, Switzerland. On top, the chimney flips open a built in lighter. You may look closely and notice all the tiny details that are quite fascinating and realistic. The craftsmanship and attention to detail is evident in this piece. 12″x 10″x 9. The red paint on the roof is slightly separating, giving it a “cracked” appearance (not significant)… This is most likely due to the paint containing strong solvents… One window shudder is missing on one side window…. A SWISS’BLACK FOREST’ FRUITWOOD HUMIDOR. Modelled as a cabinet, the top section surmounted by two carved birds perched on a naturalistic scene with hinged doors with original working brass lock and bolt along with the old original key opening to reveal 6 pull-out trays each for 8 cigars, to hold a total of 48 cigars each in shaped recesses. The bottom section with a single frieze drawer. Finely hand carved, 19th century Swiss artisans, Grand Tour souvenir of that area. The back of the cabinet is plain un carved. Each of the 6 sliding trays are in excellent condition and are 7wide x 4.5 deep. The chest stands a total of 14.5 including the carved birds up top. Please see the photos. Good condition for age and type. Has a number of old small chips/tips missing to the high relief carved flowers around the cabinet – one of the birds beaks has been chipped off and has a number of chips to the leaf around the pair of birds. Beautiful colour, the old patina, with high quality carving and construction. No damage to legs or other aspects of the cabinet. Not a soaking humidifier. Each of the 6 trays will take 8 cigars of up to 12mm diameter. Total un packed weight 2.290kg -5lb US. Total hight 37cm -14.5. Delightful & RARE antique French Napoleon III or Victorian to early Edwardian era 8 3/8 tall cigar presenter box or smoker’s casket in the form of an OUTHOUSE, privy or latrine with front stairs & railing, carved door handle & latch, brass tack accenting and wonderful visual & decorative appeal! Not actually a humidor per se, there is no soaker or humidifier in this one. Isn’t this just to die for. Just in from France and you really can’t look at it without smiling. Open the door and inside is the actual seat, a hole that is likely to hold match sticks with a striker on the floor in front and fittings on the door itself to hold cigars. The lid also raises up to a small compartment for other accoutrement. A rare and delightfully mischievous little piece, don’t miss it! I haven’t tested to see if the striker works on a match but that would be the only real flaw if not. As you can see, this little treasure has been well cared for, likely displayed in a cabinet or vitrine for years and years. See pictures for all measurements. We’re easy to deal with. BEAR TOBACCO JAR MUSIC BOX. Black Forest Figural Wood Carved Humidor c. This is an Awesome BEAR TOBACCO JAR MUSIC BOX Black Forest Figural Wood Carved circa 1950. This tobacco jar music box. Is dark brown in color, with some decorative color accents, (photographed in natural light, the photos appear lighter than actual color). Is well modeled in deep relief with very good carving and detail. Depicts a seated bear carved in Black Forest style. Has an expressive face, a mouth with teeth, glass paperweight style eyes, ears straight up. Has a custom top, the head lifts open, and is fitted to the body; the base container, with a brass hinge, is the body of the bear with four outstretched paws; the base is hollowed out as a tobacco jar. Has a Thorens MUSIC BOX built into the base, which is activated by a string attached to the top; when the lid is opened the music box is activated- it plays There is No Place Like Home and Way Down Upon the Swanee River. The music box has been serviced, cleaned and oiled, and it works. Once the lid is closed the two songs stop after being played through. Has a round plinth elevated base with three small rounded feet; the underside has the winder key and access panel to the music box. Tall x 5.5 In. Wide x 6.5 In. The estimated date is circa 1950. The BEAR TOBACCO JAR MUSIC BOX Black Forest is in very good condition. Condition status includes minimal normal wear and rubbing. Overall, this work is sound, having no chips, cracks, or major defects, and having had no apparent repairs or restorations. Please see all photos which are a part of this description. Photos have been taken in indirect sunlight, reflections and lighting spots and shadows that may appear as irregularities do not necessarily indicate defects and are not necessarily chips, cracks, or discoloration. In the 1800s the wood carving industry of Switzerland started in the town of Brienz. By the end of the 1800s it had become the driving force for this industry in Switzerland and Germany. Swiss wood carvers became world renowned and featured at many international exhibitions. In Europe, Black Forest carvings (wares) became a symbol of luxury and wealth. The finest pieces of Black Forest carving were often found in Royal collections and elite collectors homes (usually Victorian world travelers).
