Large Antique English Sterling Silver Mounted Oak Cigar Box / Humidor 1903

A really good sized cigar box made from solid English Oak, all the fittings are made from solid silver including the handle. Each of the silver mounts is hallmarked for London 1903 together with the makers mark (unidentified). The key is turned to the right which releases both lids to be opened. The lids snap shut and automatically locked so you should ensure never to leave the key inside the box and close! The cedar lining is the original way to ensure the freshness of cigars; not a humidor as such as they are a modern day invention. There is one large compartment and the left hand side has a divider that can be moved or removed to create a second large compartment. Edwardian in era and remaining in excellent condition measuring 11 3/4″ x 8 1/4″ x 7 1/4 to top of handle. This item is in the category “Antiques\Other Antiques”. From an awesome New York City Gentleman’s estate, comes this fantastic Antique English “Stick & Ball” Victorian Carved Jewelry Box Chest / Humidor. It is made of multiple spindle carved elements intricately assembled and framed in on each side, a solid top and a wood liner. Double hinged lid on top. Box is in good condition overall, shows minor age / use wear (please see photos). It can be used as a jewelry chest or as a humidor, it is a large size at 12.75″ wide, 8.25″ deep, and 8 tall. Antique English Brass Mounted Oak Automated Cigar Box / Humidor – 1890. A wonderful Victorian cigar box or cabinet made from solid English Oak decorated with brass mounts, a winning combination to create a very handsome piece indeed. The top has a central shield handle shaped cartouche with one to the front drawer. These are always highly sought-after with their automated action; once the box is unlocked (complete with working key) the drawer is opened which automatically slides opens the lid, when the drawer is shut, the lid closes. The interior is fully fitted, lined in Cedar wood which is what kept cigars fresh; this is not officially a Humidor as these are modern inventions to regulate the humidity within; it is the Cedar lining that did this job well over 100 years ago. The bottom drawer is fitted with nickel tray for cigar trimmings and beyond is a trough for matches and a strike. Superb condition, measuring 12.5 inches wide, 7.5 inches deep and x 6.25 inches tall. Slightly tapered body with a thickened edge (small cracks) banded base and flared foot. Contoured lid with acorn finial (slightly skewed). The interior with a second lid or press which preserved the tobacco from the air. Imperfections as mentioned incurred in its working life and now with good patina. A top quality cigar box made from English solid / sterling silver, a heavy box with good gauge silver with solid cast bracket feet and the most fabulous two hinged handles to either side, both separately hallmarked. When the lid is lifted, you can feel the weight and gauge of silver; the interior is fully fitted with cedar wood lining with two movable dividers which can be removed for very large cigars. The silver is fully hallmarked for London 1928 together with the makers mark for the top notch silversmith, Richard Comyns, always produced quality pieces.
