A wonderful find antique french ebonised wood with bur wall nut 6 mechanical opening doors with guilt metal outer decoration and inner triple cigar holder behind each door a great collectors item great gift and would be a pleasure to use too. It does need work i like it as it is as a decorators item but restored would be amazing 1 of the pouter door decorations is missing there are 3 missing / damaged internal fittings (moved around would leave 1 door with no fittings and 1 with just the base cup). The ebonised wood base has had a repair which cleaning away the glue and polishing would make a huge difference. I hope all this information helps. And would love if some one was to restore this. ANTIQUE FRENCH FROM SARREGUEMINES FIGURAL DUENDE GNOME ELF DWARF PIPE EN BOIS. TOBACCO, JAR, POT, BOX, CASE, HUMIDOR, PIPE HOLDER. THE HAT SEEMS TO BE BROKEN, BUT IS LIKE THAT. IS IN PERFECT CONDITIONS. BUYERS CAN CHECK IN THE INTERNET ABOUT THIS FIGURE WITH THIS WORDS: (PIPE EN BOIS CASTIGATE SIFFLENDO). I SHOW HERE PART OF THE TEXT. Voici, ce qui m’a été présenté comme un pot à tabac, en grès, qui m’a tout d’abord intrigué par la présence de ce gros sifflet dans la bouche du personnage. Il s’agit bien d’un simple sifflet de grosse taille et non d’une flûte ou d’un ocarina. En premier lieu, le pot porte à sa base un gros cartouche ” Pipe en bois ” qui identifie le personnage : il s’agit de Georges Cavalier (Tours 1842 – 1878) dit ” Pipe en bois “, étudiant et cabaliste parisien au milieu du XIXème siècle, dont Les mémoires ont été rééditées par les éditions Champ Vallon, précédés d’une biographie par Jean-Jacques Lefrère. Georges Cavalier devait ce surnom de pipe en bois aux traits de son visage, secs et asymétriques, tels ceux représentés sur certaines pipes en bois sculptées. Voilà qui explique la présence du sifflet comme attribut du personnage, ainsi que la citation latine figurant sur le pot proprement dit : ” Castigat sifflendo cocodès “, citation inconnue sur internet à ce jour mais qui n’est autre qu’un pastiche de la devise de la comédie, souvent attribuée à Molière, Castigat Ridendo Mores. “Les mentions ” Pièces de théâtre ” et ” Drames sur les livres posés à terre (et que le personnage n’hésite pas à piétinner) viennent compléter l’explication de manière évidente, mais sans s’appuyer plus précisément sur l’une ou l’autre des uvres malmenées par les étudiants en cabale. Le chiffre 343 est le numéro de forme de la pièce, qui permet de dater lobjet et de lattribuer à la manufacture de Sarreguemines de façon certaine, puisque les catalogues ou tarifs des objets de fantaisies de la manufacture (conservés au musée) stipulent pour ce numéro : 343 Pot à tabac pipe en bois, grès et permettent de dater celui-ci vers 1870. Fabulous vintage French smoker’s presenter box with hidden storage for cigars & cigarettes or cheroots in the from of a stack of antique leather bound books, this one with actual individual leaves or pages in the lid, gilt embossed bindings including a crown topped armorial style crest on the lid, entitled Histoire De France and in wonderful condition! Quite unique, we’ve offered these in the past and they always sell as quickly as we can get them listed. With the look of two old leather bound volumes but hidden inside is a dual-lidded compartment for cigars in the base and fittings for cigarettes or cheroots under each lid! As realistic as they get and, I’m sure the top book is genuine with several individual pages in the top! Open the lid and there are numerous individual pages above the lower smoker’s compartment. The first page entitled Histoire De France by Tome Septieme and a bit further in is the Parisian editor information and an ink stamp in the top right corner of that page. The bindings are somewhat aged but gilt or gold leaf lettered and the set is in great condition, age considered! Also a gold embossed stamp on the base of “Made in France”. Good to very good condition, age & materials considered. As said, these are two actual antique texts but we think the conversion is vintage. A few spots at the edges of the bindings with some wear and/or damage but, as you can see, it’s in overall wonderful condition. There is a bit of tearing to the right side of a few pages just above the compartments, all visible in images. See pictures for all measurements. We’re easy to deal with. You are very important!
