Antique handmade English wood silver-plate porcelain tobacco jar humidor box

Up for sale is a wonderful handmade antique English lidded tobacco jar. It hand made from wood and has a sheen finish with silver-plated handle and badge on the face. It also has a matching wooden removable lid. The inside is lined with thick white porcelain bucket and also has a high gloss finish. It measures 6 1/2 inches tall without measuring handle by 5 3/4 inches wide. The piece is in nice condition but has a split where the two pieces of wood were mounted together. Refer to last photo. 4 3/4″ X 4 1/4 X 5″ Tall, with the lid on. A great early piece of English Brown Stoneware. The box is sprigged with a pair of Dolphins on two sides and Venus rising from the sea on the other two. The handle on the lid is a resting Lion. There is no damage, cracks, chips, scratches, etc. The rim decoration appears to be a flowery wreath. The base is plain. No maker is indicated. A fabulous and very unusual cigar box or humidor, English made around 1900. The box is silver plated with a wonderful bark design with the glazed lid having a handsome English hunt print with hand painted detail. Unusually this example comes with a working lock and key. The interior of the box is fully lined in Cedar wood which was the way the cigars were kept fresh; a humidor as such is a modern invention. The box was clearly made for a French retailer, the cedar lining signed by the Paris retailer; E. Lenoir, 49, Boulevard des Capucines, Paris ; one of the four’grands boulevards’ of Paris, France, a chain of roads running east-west that includes the boulevard de la Madeleine, the boulevard des Capucines, the boulevard des Italiens and the boulevard Montmartre. Rare Antique English Oak Novelty Carriage Cigar Box / Humidor Reg. 1904

Rarely found or even seen, this novelty Edwardian cigar box is beautifully executed in solid oak in the form of a horse drawn carriage. The sides are inlaid to emulate the panelling and door, the window made from the original mirrored glass. To either side there are polished brass door handles and removable carriage lamps. The example would have been used to roll down the centre of a large dinner table to serve after dinner cigars; the wheels all in perfect working order. The top of the carriage opens to reveal a cedar lined interior to keep the cigars fresh; often referred to as a humidor, that is in fact a modern invention, it is the cedar lining that did this job over 100 years ago. At the back of the carriage is a locked drawer with working key, which once opened reveals a match compartment, match strike and tray for spent matches and another smaller cedar lined compartment. The drawer is lucky enough to have been stamped with an English design registration number which allows us to date it accurately to 1904, Edwardian in era. A fabulous chunky double cigar box / humidor. Standing on four original ball feet, the box has two lidded compartments, lined in Cedar wood to keep the contents fresh. These are often referred to as Humidors, this is a modern invention and so isn’t officially a humidor; it is the Cedar wood that did the job. Made from English sterling silver, there are numerous hallmarks to all the components, most rubbed due to the smooth finish of the box. The marks can be made out to be for Birmingham 1905, a true Edwardian example. An impressive piece in excellent condition, minor wear commensurate with age. 10″ x 6″ x 4 1/2 tall to top of handle. A superb large cigar cabinet with lovely arched glazed doors retaining the original bevelled glass. Made from the most stunning Burl Walnut timber, with a gorgeous grain and a warm, rich toffee colour. With polished brass swing handles to either side. The fronts of the three drawers have pairs of matching brass swing handles which create an attractive show through the glass. The interior of the drawers is lined in Cedar wood which is what kept cigars fresh; this is not officially a Humidor as these are modern inventions to regulate the humidity within; it is the Cedar lining that did this job well over 100 years ago. Welcome to Antiques & Moore! THIS LISTING IS FOR A NICE ANTIQUE ENGLISH WALNUT CASE FULLY LINED HUMIDOR WITH KEY. BOX MEASURES 11″ LONG, 8 1/4″ WIDE AND 6 1/2 DEEP. WEIGHS 9.6 POUNDS. THIS NICE HUMIDOR HAS A BEAUTIFULLY GRAINED WALNUT CASE AND ORIGINAL KEY. THE BOX HAS A LONG BRASS “PIANO” HINGE THAT OPENS AND CLOSES CORRECTLY. THERE IS A CHAIN THAT CONNECTS THE TOP TO THE BOTTOM TO HOLD THE BOX IN AN OPEN POSITION. THE INTERIOR OF THE LID IS LINED WITH A SLIGHTLY DISCOLORED CHALKY TYPE SURFACE THAT KEEPS MOISTURE FROM THE CIGARS AND HAS PROBABLY DISCOLORED FROM THE FUMES OF THE TOBACCO OF THE CIGARS. THE BASE IS LINED WITH A WHITE GLASS ON THE FOUR SIDES AND ON THE BOTTOM AND THIS LINING IS IN EXCELLENT, UNDAMAGED CONDITION. THE BOX/CASE HAS A NICE BRASS LOCKING MECHANISM WITH A BRASS COVERED KEY HOLE AND COMES WITH ITS ORIGINAL KEY. THIS NICE HUMIDOR IS IN VERY GOOD ESTATE CONDITION AND IN APPROPRIATE CONDITION TO BE USED TO STORE CIGARS. THERE IS AN AGE/STRESS CRACK THAT EXTENDS ACROSS THE LENGTH OF THE TOP WHICH IS OFTEN FOUND ON 19th CENTURY BOXES REGARDLESS OF THE TYPE WOOD USED IN CONSTRUCTION. THERE IS ALSO A SLIGHT SEPARATION IN THE SEAM WHERE THE WOOD JUST BELOW THE TOP OF THE BOX. THERE ARE A COUPLE OF FAINT SURFACE SCRATCHES AND MINOR DINGS IN THE WOOD FROM NORMAL WEAR AND A VERY SLIGHT NICK ON THE BOTTOM OF ONE BACK CORNER. P&B Ltd English sterling hallmarks throughout. Measures 9.25 inches x 6.5 inches. 2.75 inches tall not including the handle. Total weight is approximately 55 Troy Ounces. Condition: please note the cigar cutter needs a repair. Mechanism needs to fit into silver properly. There are also a couple of pin point dings on the box lid and on the sides.
