1920-30's EGYPTIAN MOTIF TOBACCO BOX, WOOD, EMBOSSED LEATHER, LINED IN MILK GLASS

Wonderful 1920’s – 1930’s footed tobacco box or cigar box. This is a wood box covered with a thin leather layer and lined with milk glass. The leather is embossed with an Egyptian motif, with some muted coloring. The top shows an Egyptian queen holding a lotus flower in a papyrus (felucca) vessel with a servant rowing, the Nile shows in the background and more flowers are around the boat. The sides are decorated with more lotus flowers. It is 8″ x 4 3/8″ x 3 1/4 high and has a latch that opens by pushing a small brass button. The glass lining is intact without chips or cracks. Here and there it has some minor scrapes in the leather, mostly on corners and edges. There is a small area of leather missing, about 2 1/2″ x 1/2″on one end and the leather on the bottom has some cracks. Please look at the photos carefully, they are part of the description. The last 3 photos were taken with a flash, the rest were in natural light by a window. I enter the actual weight of the package and E bay calculates how much it will cost to go from my zip code to yours. If it seems excessive, it is just due to where you live and the weight of the package. My goal is to get items to you undamaged, but I have received many items broken, the post office is not very careful I’ve discovered. If something arrives and the box looks like it’s been mishandled, please take a photo, then if there is damage get a photo of the damage and send these to me so I can start a claim. The box has some size as it measures 6 1/4″ wide by 2 1/2″ tall and 3 13/16 deep to the outside rivets on the top of the box. The cigar box displays a rectangular shape and has a wonderful deep mottled and frothy green or frog skin patina that Heintz made famous. This is the favored patina with the Heintz collectors. This box has a cedar liner in the bottom and a slot on each side of the top lid in which I believe a screen that held moisture was kept. You rarely find these with the screens. The top of the box has a silver overlay pattern in an art nouveau motif along its border. It is also monogrammed in silver with the initials E. This box is considered to be in excellent condition as there are no major dents or dings. The lid opens and closes with ease. It is only lightly sprung on the front left but closes 95% of the way. The patina is excellent and only shows minors signs of wear. The piece is signed on the underside bottom with the impressed post patent diamond mark with the number 2649 also impressed just above. Below the diamond mark it is also impressed Sterling on Bronze pat. 27.12″ There is also a number “64 impressed I believe this to be the shape of the box number. These same number appears in the top right hand corner of the lid when opened. It is actually upside down on the lid. There is also a number 7F40 lightly scratched upside down under the number 64. Art Deco Bronze Brass Desk Humidor Box CDE Carl Deffner Jugendstil Tobacco Tin

A wonderful circa late 1910s to 1920s desk-top humidor box made of brass or bronze and embellished with a raised relief design, a beautiful Art Deco motif with linear and curved elements that hint at the sinuous lines of the Jugendstil style. Made by Carl Deffner of Esslingen, Germany, the underside is marked with his crossed axe and shield mark. The box in oval in shape, and it closes securely with a hinged lid that certainly seems to be airtight, as these old humidor boxes should be. It was designed to be used with a blotter sheet, to which a few drops of water could be added to help maintain the proper humidity levels. The inside of the box is lined in a white metal, likely tin. Measures approximately 5″ x 3 7/8″ at its widest and stands a little over 3 tall. It’s in very good condition with the natural patina mostly intact and no flaws or damage to note except for a small ding on one side which isn’t readily obvious unless you look at the underside.
