John McCullough Cigar Box. Strickland & Van Ness, 93 Warren St, NY. This highly unusual and RARE cigar box has the government wrap dated 1883. What makes it unusual is that it is for John McCollough cigars. McCollough was an Irish immigrant stage actor that was very popular at the time. However, just one year after this cigar box is dated, he had a breakdown onstage that marked the public beginning of his descent into madness. He was committed and died in 1885. Even more interestingly, John Wilkes Booth was a close friend of the actor. Booth performed at a benefit for McCullough just one month before assassination Lincoln, McCullough was even interview about his friend after the fact. Size: 8.63 inches long, 4.5 wide, 2.75 inches tall. Nice original condition, original paper labels intact with wear, see photos.
