Gorgeous cigar tantalus from Napoleon III era c. 1850-70 or mid-Victorian era. This French made chest is fitted with cigar-mount pull-out shelves enough to hold 36 full-sized cigars. Beautifully crafted, but not in pristine condition at this time, it’s a bargain and really does present nicely in spite of a few flaws. I’ve marked those with “x” on our photos for your review. The photographer shows it with 2 keys inside, but just one will fit and only one key will be sent out with the box. The top and front both hinge up and down to open for use. Measurements noted on the photos. Good condition for age and type. The box has a beautiful boulle worked brass and mother of pearl cartouche, set in accents of black and brown woods. An engraved monogram that looks to me to be “T S” in set therein. The burl walnut veneer is accented by 2 other wood grain veneers on the top of the box, and accented by contrasting stringing. A pencil-edging in wood finished the edging beautifully to that slightly convex lid. There is a little disruption around the escutcheon (key hole) as visible in our images, and there is a section of missing veneer on bottom of one side – marked for your review. Slight imperfections otherwise, signs of age, noted in the photos. There are 3 shelves that have a hairline, or break. All function fine as you see them. This is not a pristine example, but priced accordingly. There is an engraved signature on the lockplate, but I can’t read it. Overall, even with a few flaws, a really beautiful old treasure!
